The Ford Ranger PX3, released in 2018, was the final evolution of the T6 platform before the Next Gen model launched.

It introduced updated front-end styling, improved interior technology, revised engine tuning, enhanced safety features and a more refined driving experience. The PX3 Wildtrak and XLT became two of Australia’s most popular utes during this period, widely used for both trade and touring.

PX3 Engines & Driveline

The PX3 carried over the proven 3.2L five-cylinder and 2.2L four-cylinder turbo diesel engines, with improvements to drivability and emissions. A big mechanical change arrived in the later PX3 models: the introduction of the Bi-Turbo 2.0L and the 10-speed automatic.

3.2L Turbo Diesel (P5AT)

  • 147kW / 470Nm

  • Known for strong towing

  • Shared with PX1/PX2, but with updated sensors/software

  • Common failures: EGR cooler, turbo wear, intake soot buildup

2.2L Turbo Diesel (P4AT)

  • Popular in XL/XLS fleet models

  • Generally reliable

  • DPF and injector issues on higher-km vehicles

2.0L Bi-Turbo Diesel (YLR) + 10-Speed Auto (10R80)

  • Introduced in later PX3

  • 157kW / 500Nm

  • Fast shifts & improved fuel economy

  • Common requests: intercooler pipes, turbos, 10R80 transmissions

Common PX3 Engine & Driveline Parts Customers Need

  • Turbos;
  • Injectors;
  • EGR coolers;
  • Intercoolers & pipework;
  • ECUs / PCMs;
  • Engine looms;
  • 6R80 automatic transmissions;
  • 10R80 automatic transmissions (Bi-Turbo models);
  • Manual gearboxes;
  • Diffs (various ratios);
  • Transfer cases.

⚠️Common PX2 Ranger Issues

  • EGR cooler failure (similar pattern as PX1/PX2);
  • Turbo actuator faults;
  • 10R80 harsh shifting or gear hunting;
  • DPF clogging on short-trip vehicles;
  • Rear diff whine or bearing noise;
  • BCM and module failures (battery-related);
  • Door lock actuator failure (still common across PX series);
  • Cooling system leaks from thermostat housings.

🔩 Body & Interior Components

  • PX3-specific front-end panels (bumper, grille, headlights);
  • Guards, bonnets & tailgates;
  • Wildtrak-specific trims;
  • Headlights with DRL bars;
  • Rear combination lamps;
  • Interior trims, seats & consoles;
  • Updated SYNC 3 infotainment units;
  • Instrument clusters;
  • Mirrors, door modules & actuators;

PX3 exterior differs heavily from PX1/PX2, so many parts do not interchange.

🔄 PX3 Ranger Parts Interchangeability

While the PX3 is closely related to the PX2 mechanically, many body, interior and electronic components are PX3-specific. Some driveline components carry over, but most exterior and electrical parts do not interchange with PX1/PX2. Door shells are mainly the same.

  • Engines: 3.2L/2.2L share similarities with PX2 but have updated sensors/ECU calibration. Main engine block is more or less the same;
  • 10R80 Transmission: unique to Bi-Turbo models;
  • Panels: PX3 front end is facelifted → no PX2/PX1 panel interchange;
  • Interior: updated design, limited PX2 compatibility;
  • Electronics: many PX3 modules differ due to SYNC 3 and updated safety systems.
